Until recently, the nearest secondary school ("collège") was in Jeremie—10 km away. (Only three towns in Grand’Anse department have a full secondary school.) Students from Sassier who wanted to continue beyond the 6th grade faced a long daily hike over tough mountain roads. Most parents could not afford tuition, room, and board... but they desperately wanted their children to continue their education.
